FOOD

Me and Sam Choy

Those of you who know me, know I like my food.  I love food.  Food of all different styles and tastes.  Food is good to make, and better to eat.  Food is the stuff of life.  You don't eat to live, you live to eat.
I am not a great cook, but I can bake like a mo fo.  I learned several things from watching the .  My favorite show was "Baker's Dozen," but it was canceled or something.  Of course I enjoy a good Emeril every now and then.  Whether it be Live or Essence, Emeril always "kicks it up a notch."  In my opinion, I think Molto/Mediteranean Mario is the best cook on the network.  Mario really knows what he's doing, and is all knowledgable about the regions and stuff.  I place the most trust on his recipies.

My area of specialty in baking is cheesecakes.  As of late, I haven't been doing so well in it.  But in the past, I've made my own recipies for a good caramel, pumpkin, and eggnog cheesecake.  I have had failures in my day, but they happen on the road to success.
In terms of eating, I probably enjoy a good steak best of all.  But I LOVE soups.  I have an unatural enjoyment for soups.  Most people don't order soup separatly at restaurants, but I do.  My favorite soup is Kalbi Tang.  I also like clam chowder.  I like the chicken sweet corn soup at the House of Hong.  And I like the soups my mom makes.
I love Ice Cream.  I worked at Baskin Robbins, and this was a dream come true.  Most people say their favorite flavor is Mint Chip, or some generic crap like that.  Let me tell you, Baseball Nut is the supreme flavor of ice cream.  Chocolate flavors like Mississippi Mudd are always good too.  But Baseball Nut is the best.  I went through and graded all the flavors at Baskin Robbins on a A-F scale.  The worst flavor is Black Walnut.  That is just crap.  I guess maybe if you liked black walnuts, it would be good.  But damn, I guess I don't like black walnuts.  Regular walnuts sure, but black walnuts must suck.  My favorite fruit is cherries.  I also like Cherries Jubillee ice cream.  That stuff is cherry.  Mi Cherry Amore or Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia are good, but the chocolate actually imposes on the pure cherry taste, I think.
Buffets are always good.  The object of every buffet is to eat more than you pay for.  That is a given.  Be it traditional style or Yakiniku, eat everything.
As for restaurants, here are some of my favorites.  I made a list during wrestling season for places to eat after the season ended.  Among them are Jan Jan, Tony Roma's, any steakhouse, plate lunch preferably Zippy's or Kay's in Kaimuki, and Korean food from Ono's in Kaimuki (not Hawaiian food one in Kapahulu).  Zippy's bonus is it's desserts at Napoleon's Bakery.  Most of them are good.  And Happy, Ryan, and Abe.  Do we, or do we not enjoy a Brownie Delight?  Ohhhh.  Heeeeeell.  Yeaaaaah.  There are other good places.  Dixie's bust your belly burger is actually good tasting, if you don't try to eat the whole thing (I got 3/4 through and ate maybe 1/4 of the fries.  And then I wanted to die).  There's like Masa's Massive Plate Lunch, were you just get choke food.  I don't like Myongs.  But of course, the greatest place to eat in Hawaii is...
The Kaka'ako Kitchen.  This is my favorite of all.  It is just awesome.  Chicken Fried Chicken, Thursday special.  The bomb, baby.  Me and Milo are regulars there, and we know the manager, Tony.  He hooks us up with drinks and deserts, cause Tony rocks.  I must give major props to Happy for introducing me to the Kaka'ako Kitchen.  I will always remember it...It was during wrestling season.  Happy bought a fried rice plate lunch at the Kaka'ako Kitchen.  I tasted it, and I was like, "Damn.  This is good fried rice.  Where did you get this?"  He says, "Kaka'ako Kitchen."  I say, "Happy.  Where is this place.  I am going after season."  So he told me, and I went, the first time, with Milo.  And Tony somehow knew Milo, since Milo's dad is apparantly a regular.  And that was the beggining of the Kaka'ako Kitchen, located on Waiamu Street, near the Tuxedo Junction by Ala Moana.  Happy is a regular to.  Ask us.  We will take you.  You will love it too.
For fast food, I like In & Out.  But maybe it is generic to like In & Out.  But the burgers are good.  In & Out is only in California, but not in Berkeley.  So I enjoy it while I can.  I like Chicken McNuggets from McDonald's.  I like milkshakes from Jack in the Box.
But of course, I love my Mom's food the best.  She makes soups like Chicken soup, Meyok Kuk, and Ox Tail.  She makes Chinese Chicken Salad.  She makes good cornbeef.  All kinds of stuff.  You always love Mom's the best.  And I love my Mom's cooking.
So that is food.  Are you hungry now?  Then go eat fool.  Eat and don't stop.
