Dr. Strangelove
is a black comedy directed by Stanley
Kubrick It deals with the threat of
Nuclear War during
the Cold War in a very ironic and
comdedic fashion. The movie stars
Peter Sellers as several characters.
It is a funny movie, but it is also a bit
disturbing. Not as disturbing as Kubrick's later films, but a little
disturbing in its finale. It's not the happy ending that we are so
accustomed to nowadays.
The movie is
about the insane General Ripper, who launches an atomic bomb attack on
Russia. He is terrified that Russia has concoted
a sinister plot to destroy our precious bodily
fluids. The flouridation of water is
a sinister Commie
plot to destroy us. One of my favorite
parts of the movie is when he is explaining
this to one of Seller's characters that penetrates
into the base.
By the way, he takes
over his base, until he is able to carry
out the nuking of Russia. Anyway, he
tells delivers this emotional speech
about how this plot is destroying
everything, even "ice cream. Children's
ice cream." He is almost ready to cry.
It is hilarious.
So this guy
orders the nuking of Russia. Meanwhile, in the Washington war room,
the President is meeting with the Russian ambassador and generals trying
to stop this thing from happening. As well as deranged Dr. Strangelove.
They try to capture the base back from Ripper, and find the code to tell
the bomber not to bomb Russia.
The bomber is
on its way to
Russia. Major Kongo is flying the plane,
and he is a little insane too. A young
James Earl Jones is even part of
the flight crew.
The conflict
comes when they
discover Russia has a defence against
nuclear attack. It is a Doomsday machine
that automatically launches all their
nukes if they are ever nuked. So
they REALLY have to stop the bomb
now, or else the entire Earth will be wiped
out in nuclear holocaust.
I won't reveal
the end to anyone that hasn't seen the movie. But it is a funny film,
and clever too. A little slapstick, but a lot of irony.
YEEEEEE-HAAAAAAWW!!!!
